Jules Ombak / The World Behind the Work
The anatomy of seeing.
I don't always know which fragments of a place will stay with me. Sometimes it's a wave, a texture, a colour, or a form that returns later in paint. I photograph what catches my eye. I paint what refuses to leave it."
Emotion into Form
Rage
When feeling takes form.
Born from the collision of love, passion and fury.
What began as an eruption of colour gradually took shape through waves, layered paint, gold and fragments of a remembered place.
The painting didn't resolve the emotion. It gave it form

02 / After Australia
Red rocks, blue skies & other distractions.
After my first trip to Australia, I found myself painting its red rocks, impossibly blue skies and wonderfully stubborn vegetation. Some paintings stayed close to the landscape. Others wandered into colour, pattern and ornament. A few experiments, a lot of red paint, and an Australian landscape that kept giving me ideas.

The Blueprint
this painting began with colour and texture. Gold, sand, turquoise and deep blue were there before the image fully arrived.
As the work developed, the wave gradually took shape - first as movement, then as structure and finally as a complete painting.
This images show that shift.
Sometimes it ends up on a sofa.

Australia’s red earth has followed me into more than one painting.
Apparently, it also followed me to work.
Years later, those familiar shades of rust, ochre and sun-baked stone resurfaced while I was selecting fabrics for Crocus.
Different medium. Same fascination with colour.
Some images remain photographs.
Others return years later in paintings.
